"Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has challenged anyone wanting to buy the club to show him the money.

Ashley and his representatives have never publicly named their price for the club, but it is unlikely to be sold for less than £300m.

Sky Sports News understands that aside from purchasing the club, prospective buyers must also prove they have the funds to take the club forward.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon is trying to put together a deal to buy Newcastle.

With clubs such as Manchester United valued at more than £3billion, the onus is on any prospective buyer to make their best offer.

On Saturday, Ashley watched a match at St James' Park for the first time in 16 months. He was abused by large sections of the crowd as Newcastle lost 2-0 to Leicester City.

Ashley has now watched two games in a row. His attendance is part of a strategy being driven by chief executive Lee Charnley to build bridges with fans, players and manager Rafael Benitez.

In another conciliatory move, Ashley is planning to take Benitez and his players to dinner this week. He wants to get everyone together to clear the air and address the problems at the club and demonstrate his support and commitment.

The dinner is not connected to the news of Kenyon's interest in buying the club.

One source told Sky Sports News that until Kenyon makes an offer, it is a case of "a man with no money wanting to buy a football club".

Retail tycoon Mike Ashley has told Sky News he is in talks to sell Newcastle United in a deal he hopes will go through before the January transfer window.

Mr Ashley told Sky's Ian King Live the talks were not yet at an "exclusive" stage but that they were "at a more progressed stage than they have ever been".

He said: "I am hopeful for the Newcastle fans, for the club, for everybody, that I will be able to step aside and we will be able to get an owner in that will please everybody.

"I'd like it to be before the January transfer window."

Asked whether he saw that timetable as realistic, he said it was "possible" but that realistic was "maybe too strong a word".

"Hopefully we can carry on the good form - just recent good form - and we can get the deal done.

"Talks are at a more progressed stage than they've ever been."

The Sports Direct and House of Fraser boss did not name the prospective buyer of the Premier League club. It has previously attracted the interest of Amanda Staveley's PCP Capital Partners, which tabled a £300m bid late last year.

There has been disgruntlement among many fans about the level of transfer funds available to the club's manager Rafa Benitez.

Asked about the new owner putting in funds for Benitez, Mr Ashley said: "Yes, I am very keen to sell it to the right buyer so everybody's happy."

(Reuters) - Mike Ashley has agreed to sell Newcastle United to Abu Dhabi’s billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan for 350 million pounds ($445.24 million), the Sun reported late on Sunday.

The contracts between Ashley and Sheikh Khaled have been signed and submitted to the Premier League, according to the report.

Ashley, who bought a controlling stake in the Premier League club in 2007, has in the past tried to sell the club.

Ashley, who owns British sportswear retailer Sports Direct International Plc said last October that he had not received any acceptable offers for Newcastle, a year after he officially put the club up for sale, but told Sky News in December that talks on a deal had made promising progress.

Any potential buyer of the club must be able to provide transfer funds, he had said at the time.

Sheikh Khaled, the cousin of Manchester City owner and Arab billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, previously failed in his bid to buy Liverpool Football Club for 2 billion pounds last year, the Daily Mail has previously reported.

Sheikh Khaled is also the founder of Bin Zayed Group, a leading conglomerate with diverse business interests in the local and international markets.

Newcastle United, the Premier League and the Bin Zayed Group did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comments.

AKO je regionalnim novinama vjerovati...stvarno se nadam ali ništa bez pečata....

Ma ništa dok ili ako ikada zvanično ne objave da je klub prodat. Ne bi me iznenadilo da sada mister pohlepni digne cijenu na 500 miliona funti pa ovi odustanu ili budu dovoljno ludi pa plate.
Elem, pratim i nadam se da ćemo sljedeće sezone igrati "bratski" derbi sa šampionima.
