John Alder and Liam Sweeney - Rest In Peace

Victims of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash on Thursday included two Newcastle United supporters travelling to support their team in New Zealand.  

We're desperately sad to report that they were John Alder and Liam Sweeney. Both were well known to away followers, particularly John, whose usual matchday attire led to the affectionate nickname of "The Undertaker".  

Both were in attendance at Oldham on Tuesday, doing what they loved. Our thoughts are with their friends, families and the many fans who knew them by sight.

Watching Newcastle will never be the same again.

John, who was known as ‘The Undertaker’, is believed to have been making his way to New Zealand to watch the Magpies in their pre-season tour.

John, of Deckham, Gateshead, believed to be in his 60s, was well-known among Toon fans as he always wore a suit to the game.

The Toon fan has only ever missed one game since 1973 and travelled to every away game. He has been to America and Thailand to watch his beloved team. He only missed the one game because of a bereavement in the family.

Friends today said Newcastle had lost their number one fan.

Gdje god postoji takmicenje, postoji i rivalitet. To ce uvijek postojati ali u ovakvim situacijama je bitno pokazati da smo svi ljudi.

Nije to prvi put daa pokazuju postovanje. I Bobby Robson kad je umro,uradili su slicno. Svaka cast Sunderlandu. Ja njih nikad nisam smatrao kao rivale. Man Utd i Tottenhem od pocetka smatram vecim rivalima ,ne znam ni ja zasto...

MH17 crash: Colleagues pay tribute to Liam Sweeney


Thousands of supermarket staff have come to work in football shirts in tribute to a colleague killed when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed.

Newcastle United fans Liam Sweeney, 28, and, John Alder, 63, were among the 298 who died in Ukraine last month.

Workers at 18 Morrisons stores, including Mr Sweeney's Killingworth branch, raised money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Marie Curie.

Liam's father Barry Sweeney said it was "incredible".

"I've found out everybody loved Liam," he said.

"It's absolutely unbelievable what's happening today. Liam will be looking down thinking, 'How have I caused this stir?'"
