| http://www.balkan-sport.net/zanimljivosti/nevjerovatna-scena-natjerali-ga-da-trenira-u-rozoj-haljini-fotoja cekam ovakav dan u Newcastlu, ne cekam titule i skupa pojačanja. Ja čekam red, rad i disciplinu. Moramo pocet nosit roze haljinice. | |

| Newcastle United – Lies, Statistics and The Champions LeagueWe are just past the halfway point of the football season and we have a blank weekend, so I felt able to do a bit of historical research. We have had an up and down time of it so far, currently in eighth position – good, but nevertheless disappointing given the winning run we had back in November. Surely we cannot expect to be anywhere near the Champions’ League positions? champions league Well, it might not be fanciful to be optimistic after all. Guess how we were doing in our brilliant season a couple of years ago at this time of year? I expected to look it up and see that we were relatively highly placed after our superb start and at a moment just before our unrelievedly terrible Spring. The truth is that, at this stage, on 22 January 2012, we were in sixth position on … precisely the same number of points we have today. We were five points behind Chelsea, who had 41. And Chelsea were in fourth position. Today, of course, we are fully seven points behind Liverpool, who are in fourth position (and, incidentally, doing very nicely in the FA Cup, all at the same time). But apart from that, we are back in eighth position today, as I say. What is the significance of history in terms of league position? After all, we talk about forty points being enough to ensure survival as if it were holy writ. And usually we discover at the end of the season that forty points is indeed enough. The story at the top is rather different. Chelsea’s total of 91 points in 2006 looks hard to beat these days. Manchester United have won the league with only 80. But there is no trend. The top clubs might be getting richer, and they are getting stronger (I suspect Mata will not be the end of Manchester United’s strengthening this year), but they are not necessarily getting better than each other. Manchester United, currently, and probably temporarily, are clearly weaker. The real question is whether the top four clubs this year are better than the top four clubs of two years ago. Back then, at this stage, the top four had a total of 192 points. The top four today have a total of 193. Of course this is hardly a scientific comparison. A lot would depend on the weakness of the teams at the bottom, and who the top teams had played. Two years ago I can remember reading about how fans were suffering from altitude sickness, and how we were lucky, and how the league had spent half the season working us out. There was probably something in all of that, but I do remember being sure it couldn’t last, especially as we were on the fade. What is surprising is, relatively speaking, it did. Looking back at the table in January 2012, we were still in touch with the leaders, despite clearly being impostors, and despite being on a poor run, with Cisse’s hot streak still to kick in. There are more teams above us today but they are surely no better than the teams ahead of us back then. The points difference is neither here nor there. My powers of prediction are famously negligible. I am therefore making no predictions. But a statistician who knew nothing about football could clearly be excused for concluding that we are at least as well placed to finish fifth this season as we were two years ago. If fifth, why not fourth? We are not on the fade this time and other teams are. By the way, I did look down at the other end of the table. No lessons can be drawn about teams with 18 points at this time of year. Sunderland could go down, quite easily, but equally easily they could stay up. Sadly they have had the wit to appoint a thoroughly good manager and could stay up and win a cup. I wouldn’t swap with them. After all, there is no reason why, with a bit of a spurt, we can’t qualify for the Champions’ League. http://www.themag.co.uk/the-mag-articles/newcastle-united-lies-statistics-champions-league/ | |

| Must Read – One Newcastle Fan Who Speaks For So Many - by Mark Jensen
The Mike Ashley Newcastle shambles has really come to a head in recent days, with the Cabaye sale and no new players bought in a year.
The predictable end result of this short-sighted ruthless policy, was that despite only a couple of key players missing, Newcastle’s team contained so many weaknesses against the mackems that it could have been more than three goals on Saturday.
Both before and after the weekend, an overwhelming number of people have expressed their disgust at the running of the club and packed in their season tickets, or at least vowed to do so at the end of the season.
While anonymous people spouting off on social media that they are allegedly binning their season tickets is one thing, the number of people I personally know who have taken this step (giving up season tickets) is staggering.
I received a copy of the following from somebody who I have known for a lot of years, I played football against him and used to see him home and away week in week out, then he ended up writing for The Mag from the early issues, some twenty five years ago.
When life intervened (work, family etc) he knocked the Mag contributions on the head some years ago but I would still see him at the matches.
If I had to guess, David Edwards would have been in the last 5% to ever give up their season tickets, read below why he is now doing so and if Mike Ashley is in any doubt about the groundswell against him, he would be wise to take notice.
It is clear so many fans have now simply had enough and I take my hat off to Mr.Ashley, he’s done to David and others what I would have thought impossible, he should be ashamed but fat chance of that.
Dear NUFC Box Office,
David Edwards – 11980
I have been a loyal NUFC season ticket holder since 1984 – 30 consecutive seasons and a ‘pay at the turnstile’ in seasons prior to that.
However this last few weeks and build up of the last few years has seen me now cancel my season ticket subscription from 2014/15.
During this period, there have been many ups and downs often more lows). Players, managers and Boards have come and gone. However enough is enough with this current regime.
I am not alone in feeling completely apathetic / depressed after being constantly fed a regular diet of lies and more lies from a puppet-manager without a ‘back bone’ frightened to say it ‘as it is’ in respect of a paper thin squad and a Senior Management Team/Board whose silence is deafening and lack of ambition is there for all to see. The ‘plan’ has nothing to do with investing in the football team and challenging at least for a cup. We don’t have the expectation that some suggest, but a glimmer of hope wouldn’t go amiss.
Systematically the club is being raped.
The heart of the club has been ripped out.
Those generating an atmosphere were moved and then tricked.
The ground has been defiled (previously disgracefully renamed) and still bears the names of two companies that pose more concerns than enough around the perimeter – is that what it has come to?
Attracting quality sponsorship and substantial merchandise sales must be nigh on impossible….who would want to be associated with that lot?
Club legends (Keegan, Shearer….) have been treat with disgraceful contempt.
Investment in the “squad” very limited
A ground tour for a Father’s Day present from last year left me depressed, the place was ‘soul-less’
I could go on…..I am sure I won’t be the only one taking this decision.
It has hurt to do this, but it is the right decision until Mr Ashley and his team leave.
Notwithstanding what is happening at NUFC, football at this level has completely lost its soul and along with the likes of Sky TV have ‘killed the golden goose’ – it has become a foreign game obsessed with money!
The Premiership may be global and bring money to the UK but it’s only filling Corporate coffers and the bloated wages of footballers, agents, managers and many of whom just don’t care.
The Premier League has lead to the FA Cup and League Cup being completely devalued.
The Champions League is a perpetually money making machine for the same old clubs throughout Europe. Dare any club try to break in to their respective country’s top 2/4 and be prepared to have your players poached.
The Europa League is treat like a poison chalice with clubs moaning about two games a week, it’s group format awful/generates meaningless fixtures and allowing teams knocked out of the Champions League is just wrong (again – money, money, money….)
It is a gut wrenching moment but enough is really enough.

| Typical Away Match – Meeting Alex McLeish, A Chelsea Headhunter & His Invisible Umbrella - by Brian Standen The curious case of the Chelsea Headhunter (his invisible umbrella) and Alex McLeish. Chelsea used to be an intimidating place to go for fans, in the 80s it was a challenge to get to Stamford Bridge without meeting trouble! For young kids like me, the Armstrong Galley supporters club buses were the safest option, however even those were not immune as on one occasion I can recall a cold trip home as the bus I was on was bricked on Putney bridge. Fast forward to last Saturday and I found myself making a solo trip to Chelsea in the forlorn hope we might sneak a point. I often go to away matches alone as the middle aged motleys I go to the home games with have long since stopped going away. In fact even home games these days are becoming a challenge for them as the lure of B & Q increases as the sands of time slowly catch up and engulf them! They think I am insane for still going away! Back to last Saturday and coming out of Fulham Broadway tube, I thought find a pub, sit quiet with a few beers and watch the early game. These days the challenge is not getting to Stamford Bridge unhindered but actually getting into a licensed establishment, as anywhere that sells beer adopts a strict home fans only policy. When you think about the opposite attitude of the pubs in Newcastle, it does annoy you somewhat. In days gone by the area around Stamford Bridge was made up of dark unwelcome pubs that were best avoided, however nowadays it has become a cosmopolitan rich man’s paradise; posh wine bars, tapas bars, top class restaurants, steak houses, up market pizzerias etc Again back to last Saturday and trying to get a pint was proving difficult, I was met with a variety of obstacles such as; “have you booked?”, “are you eating?”, one place even wanted to see my match ticket or CFC Season ticket! Eventually I decided on an honest approach at what looked like a pub, the name (Malt Shovel ) suggested it was, the doorman was a canny chap and as I was on my own he let me in. This was more of a restaurant than a pub however, but as I was inside and at the bar I cared not, even the £4.60 a pint cost did not deter me (yes £4.60). Alas there was no Sky Sports, in fact there was not even a TV, but the expensive lager was going down really well, making a quick phone call to home my accent was picked up by another fellow who was on his own, and once off the phone he engaged me in an hour or two of pretty good conversation. Clearly he had a past, he regaled in tales of times gone by much as we often do, away games were spoken about, he had seemingly been arrested in virtually every country in Europe following England and Chelsea, he spoke about trips all over the UK and I was not surprised to learn that in the 80s, Chelsea and their Headhunters while not fearful of visiting Newcastle, always knew it was a challenge! He went on to say he hated the Chelsea fans of today; tourists, bandwagon jumpers, modern day yuppies et al, people who follow his club with no sense of CFC identity! In essence, nowadays fans go to the games because it is the social thing to do! As the £4.60 beer flowed I have to admit the conversation was quite entertaining and with the lack of sky sports it killed time, he strangely had a genuine sense of jealousy about the support NUFC get, proper fans, although he could not understand my lack of enthusiasm for following a England! The Mag, Issue 287, 8 Feb 2014, Newcastle United Magazine, NUFCEx premier league manager Alex McLeish was stood behind us and when I noticed this I offered a throwaway comment to him. I have a memory of him turning down a move to Newcastle many years ago, so I said ” alreet Alex, why did you not sign for Newcastle all those years ago?” Not only did he provide an answer but duly joined our conversation, and for the next 30 mins we spoke about nothing but Newcastle United, he spoke about the ex Newcastle players he knew, speaking highly of Bob Moncur and Kevin Keegan, and he was genuinely intrigued when I waxed lyrically about Tony Green ( not the overweight BBC Darts commentator ). I asked if he wanted another go at football management, he said he would, I then asked if given the opportunity would he ever consider managing the poisoned chalice that is Newcastle United, his reply was very honest, ” there would not be a better job in football, because winning a trophy for Newcastle would mean a lifetime of not buying a drink,” however he then went on to say he could not work under the current regime and has full admiration for Alan Pardew! Obviously he knew Pardew well and maybe he was just being diplomatic when he said he is a very good manager and all round nice bloke. When I mentioned the fact some Newcastle fans (incl me) see him as a puppet he did disagree, saying Pardew was in an impossible position, it is impossible to say the right things to the press for both fans and such an owner – fair point but my opinion remain unchanged! He also told me why he did not sign for NUFC all those years ago, it was simply because Newcastle sacked the manager before he signed on the dotted line and it put doubts in his mind, Jim Smith was the sacked manager! The Chelsea headhunter who was now just a bit part player in the conversation wanted a pic with Alex and of course he duly obliged, me I just wanted to talk football! Overall we had a really good 3 hours before the game, but glancing at my watch it was quarter to three and the ground was ten minutes away, so it was time to go, Alex McLeish, a manager who previously I had little or no thought for, had been genuinely good company! The final amusement before the debacle of the football was walking to the ground with the aforementioned former Chelsea Headhunter, we passed stall upon stall of sellers selling all kinds of tat memorabilia , those awful half and half scarves for example, he had genuine hatred that his club was seemingly turning into the tourist attraction that is Man Utd, the heavens then suddenly opened and out of nowhere he produced an umbrella. I smiled inside as thoughts off huge wasteland dust ups between Chelsea and Milwall being suddenly halted due to rain came to mind, “hang on lads I need to get my coat”, maybe the changes in and around Stamford Bridge had got to him more than he knew, and for a few seconds I wondered if that was a good or bad thing? | |
